According to human-rights groups, 42 people have been killed in
Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, after
security forces clashed with protesters over legislation that would
allow President Joseph Kabila to extend his 14 years in office. The
government claims 10 “looters” and one policeman have been killed.
Clashes also broke out in the east, where protesters demonstrated over
cut off Internet and text-messaging services in the area. This week, the
Catholic Church called on the Congolese to oppose the president’s
attempt to stay in power.
